Six remanded seven days over kidnap of salesmen



MIRI: A women was among six suspects who were yesterday ordered by the magistrates’ court to be remanded for seven days to assist in police investigation into the kidnapping of three salesmen of a direct selling company based in Kuala Lumpur.Magistrate Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani issued the order in response to an application by investigating officer Inspector Mohd Khairi Mohd Nor under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In his application, Khairi said about 3.30pm on Dec 14, the brother of one of the kidnap victims made a police report at Ampang Police Station in Selangor.

In his report, he said about 2pm on the same day, he received a phone call from one of the kidnappers on his younger brother’s telephone, telling him that the brother and two of his colleagues had been kidnapped and the kidnapper asked for a ransom of RM30,000.

The police report was later referred to Miri Central Police Station for further action.

The complainant had  banked the money into one of the kidnapper’s account right after receiving the call.

After receiving the money and cashing half of it, the kidnappers freed the three victims, in their 20s, whom they confined in a hotel room here for more than two hours.

Acting on information received around 7pm on Dec 14 a team of police headed by Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP) Zainan Azili Abdul Latif raided a house in Taman Tunku and arrested four suspects including a women on suspicion of involvement in the case.

In another raid carried out at 11am on the same day at a house in the same residential area, the police arrested two more suspects.

The police seized RM15,000 believed to part of the ransom money.

In his application, Khairi said detaining the suspects for seven days would enable the police to gather detailed information on the case.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 3 (1) of Kidnap Act 1961 which provides for the death sentence or life imprisonment.
